On September 20, Tonality gathers at the historic Ebell of Los Angeles for an evening of music, remembrance, and conversation. The evening begins with the Reception Circle, an intimate reception and dinner with food, wine, and time alongside the artists before the music begins. It is the heart of this night, and of how we sustain the work: a room of people who believe music can hold grief, name injustice out loud, and carry a story forward.
At the center of the evening is Running From, Running To, a choral reflection on the life of Ahmaud Arbery, composed by Tonality's founder Dr. Alexander Lloyd Blake and co-written with Ogi, drawn from our album Songs of Remembering. His mother, Wanda Cooper-Jones, joins us, and the Tonality Scholars, the high school singers of our education program, perform alongside the ensemble. A talkback follows the performance.
